Earth Day Scavenger Hunt on the World Wide Web

April 22 is Earth Day. To celebrate Earth Day, we're going to have a scavenger hunt on the World Wide Web. We're also going to practice typing and printing things on a computer. Answer the questions by typing them using a word processor program. We'll print them out at the end.

Start by going to the Earth Day home page. What is Earth Day the symbol of?

When was the first Earth Day?

What are two cities in Illinois that are having special events for Earth Day?

List three other countries that are having special activities for Earth Day? Tell about one of those activities.

Next, go to Earth Day Hawaii. What is the #1 thing you can do to save the islands (or wherever you are)?

Now, go to the E-Patrol page. Do the E-Patrol Quiz. What are two of the things that you learned?

Go back to the E-Patrol Page and look at the Energy Savers. What are two ways that you can save energy in each room of your house?

Next, go to Learn About Recycling. After you finish drinking a pop, what should you do with the bottle or can? What are the steps for recycling a pop bottle into a message board?

Now, we'll read some haiku poems about Earth Day. First, we'll find out what a haiku is. Go to the Haiku Archive. What is a haiku? (how many syllables are in each line?)

Now that we know what a haiku is, go to the Earth Day poems. These were all written by third grade students in Michigan. After you read some of the poems, try to write your own Earth Day haiku.

Now find a picture that you like. You can choose an Earth Day Poster, or you can make your own picture of the earth with the Earth Viewer. Once you choose your favorite picture, include it with the rest of your answers.
